Mary Jo and Lorenzo Chouinard have been married 54 years having met in college. Their education careers started in Montana where they taught for six years before moving to Riverton in 1979.
Mary Jo held various positions within S.D. #25: librarian, English teacher, and for the last twenty-five years of her career, assistant principal at Riverton Middle School and principal of Lincoln, Rendezvous, and St. Margaret’s Elementaries. According to her, it is vital to be fully present in all you do. When at work, focus on work; when home, focus on family. She added that she believes no job is beneath her. If something needs to be done, you jump in. You get a great smile when you fish out a lost retainer from the lunchroom garbage! Mary Jo was selected as the National Distinguished Principal for Wyoming in 2009. As she is quick to point out, you don’t receive this honor without having the best staff in the state.
Lorenzo is an award-winning educator and spent his entire career as a history teacher and coached football, basketball, baseball and track at the high school and middle school levels. Lorenzo loved to engage his students in challenging discussions about a myriad of issues facing the country. For 30 years he helped students fundraise to attend Close-Up in Washington D.C. Traveling with these students was always the highlight of spring. After retiring, he served on the Riverton School Board.
Throughout their lifetime, the Chouinards were pillars of the Riverton community. They were always there for all of their students to make sure they had what was needed to be successful. They hosted several international students, and they still hear from many of their former students today.
Now they have started a new chapter in their lives as grandparents in Cheyenne. The six months they promised to help out with a newborn has turned into seven years and three grandsons. In addition, the Chouinards volunteer with the Unaccompanied Student Initiative and St. Joseph’s Food Pantry.
According to the Chouinards, “Riverton welcomed us with open arms and provided the opportunity to fulfill all our career goals. It was the perfect place to raise our daughter. We cherish the memories and friendships from the 37 years we were blessed to call Riverton home.”
Kevin Hines is an author, survivor, storyteller, mental health advocate, and filmmaker. Kevin will share his inspiring story of survival. Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge, he is one of only 39 people to survive the jump. He said that if one person had asked him if he was ok that day he would not have attempted to take his life. Since then he has dedicated his life to spreading awareness of mental health and making an impact on others for good.
